Lost amidst a roller coaster ride of a season for the Boston Red Sox in 2016 is the distinct possibility that Rick Porcello could be placing himself into the mix as a legitimate candidate for the Cy Young Award in the American League. Yes, this may sound somewhat crazy (“Rick Porcello Cy Young winner”) considering how much of a pounding Porcello took from opposing teams and the fans and media in Boston prior to 2016. Currently there is hardly a mention of Porcello’s success as the pitcher appears to be gliding peacefully under the radar. Red Sox fans and media remain ever focused on the manager’s decisions and execution along with the disappointing results from the $31 Million/year “Ace” David Price.
So, how absurd is it to consider Rick Porcello as a Cy Young candidate in the American League? As of August 3rd Porcello is tied for first in the American League in wins at 14 with three others. Two of the others are Chris Sale and J.A. Happ who along with the third being Chris Tillman are certainly not a group of cupcakes just getting lucky this season. In terms of ERA Porcello ranks 14th in the American League sporting a 3.47 ERA which is quite solid but not spectacular. If he continues to receive offensive support from the brawny and explosive offense of the Boston Red Sox it isn’t crazy to think he might rack up 20+ wins if he stays healthy.

Taking down the AL Cy Young could be pretty tough though for Porcello. Cole Hamels is 12-2 with a 2.84 ERA playing for a good Texas Rangers squad that should help him get more wins along the way. Aaron Sanchez is 11-1 with a 2.71 ERA for a loaded Toronto Blue Jays offense as well. We will simply have to tune in to all of the great MLB action to find out from here. Rick Porcello is very quietly putting together an excellent season for the Boston Red Sox but a Cy Young Award will be his toughest task yet.
