The Nebraska Cornhuskers Football program competes as a member of the NCAA Division I-A Football Bowl Subdivision, representing the University of Nebraska in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskers play their home games at Memorial Stadium, which is located on the grounds of the old Keene State College, which has been the site of some very successful football teams in the past. The facility is a venue that can hold nearly eighty thousand people but fortunately the capacity is only sixty-five thousand. The largest crowd to ever attend a college football game in Lincoln was eighty-two thousand people for the Cotton Bowl against Texas A&M in the year 1998. Since becoming an official college football program, the L.A. Cowboys and other football programs throughout the United States have used Memorial Stadium as venues for their home games. The football program currently boasts a total of 95 graduate players and numerous student-athletes. The L.A. Cowboys have also been known to host foreign teams, including those from Germany, Spain, Brazil, and Australia. The college has also been known to compete against other professional sports teams such as the NFL and NBA.
Nebraskans have been very successful in international sports competition. They have won the world championships in swimming, track and field, softball, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. They have also captured the 2021 Olympic gold medal in swimming, setting the stage for their run to repeat as gold medalists in 2021. The university has also captured four state athletic conference championships, including the most recent one, the 2021 championship. Nebraska has also set several records throughout its history of sports, including the most Academic All-Big Ten teams, the highest total number of graduates in any single school in the history of NCAA athletics, and the most academic scholarship awards in the history of NCAA sports.
Nebraskans also are the home of some of today’s top college football programs. They are members of both the NCAA’s Mid-American Conference and the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska has also played in the Little League Baseball, Western Athletic Association, and Little League Baseball.
The football game is one that has always held a lot of significance for the Cornhuskers. They have won the first five national championships, which include the Fiesta Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Insight Bowl, and most recently the Bowl Championship Series. The football game at Memorial Stadium is always extremely unique because it features a difficult field that requires a lot of skill on both offensive and defensive lines. Two of these include future NFL players like Joe Montana and Tom Brady. quarterback Tommy Armstrong graduated from the University of Nebraska in the late 70s. He became one of the best college football players of all time. Before his retirement he became one of only eight bowl game starters to be selected in the Hall of Fame list. Nebraska has also made quite a few college ornaments from their wins in the Fiesta Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Insight Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl.
The basketball program has had some success as well. Currently they rank third in the conference. Lincoln is the only university to win the national championship in basketball. The volleyball program has made quite a few trips to the NCAA tournament and has finished in the top five twice.
