Maryland Terrapins football is one of the colleges most frequently represented in the Big Ten Conference. The Terrapins are joined by five other Maryland universities in the conference including College Park, College of Notre Dame, Towson, Old Dominion and University of Maryland Baltimore County. The Terrapins are part of the Colonial Athletic Association and participate in the league’s football championship events. The teams play each season at Xian, a facility located in China Town, Beijing, China.
The Terrapins are an independent university. The University of Maryland is one of the largest colleges in the Maryland region, enrolling over 28,000 undergraduate students. In addition to its nationally-acclaimed student body, the university provides a number of athletic programs for both men and women. Due to the number of sports available on the M Maryland campus, there are several sports that are especially played by the members of the college team.
football is one of the athletic programs at the university. The Terrapins are represented in the Big Ten Conference, playing in the top division, the Eastern Division. This team was one of the original members of the Big Ten, and as such, has received numerous national awards including being ranked number one in the nation in the poll for the latest college football poll. Many of the recent renovations to the College Park campus, in addition to the new found parking lot facility, are credited to the Lady Bulldogs.
The team’s current coach is Roger Smith, who is a former assistant for the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Smith has worked with some of the nation’s best and brightest coaches, including former University of Maryland coaches Ray Knowles and Doug Meiners. He has been able to bring a high-tempo style of coaching to Maryland, which has produced some standout athletes on the field. The student-athletes on the field are not only inspired by the winning mentality of their coach, but also by the large crowd of students cheering them on. This has created an atmosphere that has become known as “The Little League Effect.”
Another reason that Maryland Terrapins football has made so much noise is the fact that they play in the state of Maryland, the home of many professional teams. As such, it has become imperative that the university creates a home field that is capable of attracting fans from out of state. During the recent renovation of their football stadium, it was discovered that the Terrapins were playing in the same venue as two of the country’s premier Division I colleges, Virginia Tech.
The venue, George Mason University, has a very impressive football program, having won the Atlantic Coast Conference twice. Despite this fact, the Terrapins have never been able to produce a championship winning team, something that seems to be a necessity for any program in the modern era of college football. Regardless, George Mason University is a place where fans go to cheer for their college team. A large number of fans gather at the center field area of the campus, often carrying signs that say, “Go Jackets!” When the team wins, there is generally a celebration that includes pizza and beer, among other things.
With all the success that Maryland Terrapins football fans have enjoyed for the last two decades, many people are beginning to ask if the school is planning on moving into a different stadium in the near future. The answer is yes. Effective immediately, the university is changing the way that its football games are presented. Starting in the fall of 2021, the school will begin playing its home games at what is now known as John Hancock Stadium. The venue is being designed by a famous Baltimore architect, causing many Terrapin supporters to grow frustrated with the delays. However, Maryland is quite optimistic about the quality of the venue and its ability to attract high attendances.
Despite the fact that no one is quite sure when the new venue will be finished, it is safe to say that we could be seeing major improvements in the future. If you want to make the most of your Maryland Terrapin football fan experience, it is important to remember that the school does not plan on moving into the new stadium anytime in the near future. Instead, the school will be playing their home games at the current RFK Stadium, which has been the home of the football program for almost thirty years. If you want to give the fans in the DC area a chance to experience a new venue during spring football season, then consider making your way to RFK Stadium on game day and experience an exciting new atmosphere for a change.
