Sporting Kansas City, also known as Sporting KC, is an American pro soccer team based in the Kansas City area. The club joined the North American Soccer League in its second season of play in 1992. This was the first team in the National Football League to join the competition. The team has won the first two playoff games and is currently second in the Eastern Conference.
This is a huge advantage for Sporting Kansas City since it allows them to grow as a brand. The club has also been able to build a stadium that is fully equipped to host major sporting events. The venue, called Starfire Park, is located just outside of the city of Kansas City. In addition, the club manages to attract some of the top names in sports in the world.
There are three different divisions in Sporting KC. The first is the amateur side, where players on both the teams compete for the same honors. The second division is called the Pro Franchises where each club has one roster spot going into each home games. Lastly there is the State Line, where each team plays against every other team in both the amateur and pro leagues.
In addition to competing in leagues Sporting KC has found that they can grow their fan base by playing tournaments and exhibition matches outside the state line. The latest event to take place in the area was the Toyota soccer Tournament which was won by Sporting Kansas City. The venue was the historic community of Citizens Park in the south central Kansas City. The winning team from the tournament went on to play in the US Open of soccer. Not only have the pros won a tournament in this venue but a number of youth players have also gone on to play in the professional leagues.
Matt Besler, Mikeys Bossy, and Krisztian Tomas are just three of the popular professional players who have become Sporting KC’s shining star. Besler started his career at Sporting KC as an assistant coach for the club’s academy players. He has gone on to play with the first team of the MetroStars of the North American Soccer League and later with the first team of the Fort Lauderdale Stampede of the United Soccer League. Besler is currently in his second season with Sporting Kansas City and is in his best scoring drought of his career.
Matt Besler is another rising star for Sporting KC and also happens to be the son of former Major League Baseball player, Brian Bosworth. The younger Besler has been playing since he was just six years old but his star has shone a brighter due to the work that he does with the youth team of Sporting KC. In his role as the team’s field technician he has helped mold younger players such as forwards Michael Gatley, Collin Fisher, and Kiki Andersen into complete attacking threats on the field. Sporting KC has also signed defender Chance Johnson from the MLS and Besler will probably be given the start of the season in that role.
Sporting KC’s goalscorer this year could be anyone from Matt Besler to goalkeeper Jimmy Franklin to forwards Igorianceslavo Andrakakunst, Andyroyal Untong and rookie standout Tommy Nickel. Besler is third in the MLS in saves percentage, behind only SKC teammate Chris Wondolowski and FC Dallas striker Mauro Diaz. Sporting KC’s offense ranks second in the league in goals scored (behind FC Dallas) and third in assists (behind FC Dallas and Vancouver).
Sporting KC has never made it to the MLS playoffs and it’s unlikely that they will make it this year. Last year their hopes of a trip to the MLS Cup final were dashed when the San Jose Earthquakes upset them in the first round. The loss stung Sporting Kansas City fans and the optimism for this year’s season was gone. But don’t count out the red and white! Sporting Kansas City has enough talent to win the Supporters’ Shield and make a deep run into the playoffs.
