Boston Celtics 2019-20 Schedule
NBA Live Stream – How To Watch Every Celtics Game
2019: Irving and Horford gone. Hayward fully recovered? No excuses for Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Time to take charge of this team and get to the finals.
Boston Celtics: OddsShark.com has the season win total for The Green listed at 52.5 wins. This is the fifth highest total in the NBA. We all know these betting lines are set up to entice equal wagering action on both sides of the line but nonetheless this is indicative of the excitement entering this 2016/2017 season for the Boston Celtics.
Is this high level of expectations and excitement warranted? Time will tell but there is no doubt that the addition of Coach Brad Stevens and masterful stockpiling of draft assets and creation of cap flexibility by Danny Ainge have set up the Celts for long term success. That’s all fine and dandy but in year 3 of Coach Brad The Green got bounced in the first round rather convincingly (granted losing Avery Bradley didn’t help matters). Here’s a look at some key factors driving what type of success the Celts will or will not have this season:
Al Horford
Al Horford is a very nice player but he is not a dominant, top 5 in the NBA absolute superstar. That’s fine. The key is that he is a very solid, all-star caliber player that fits very well into the Celtics scheme and objectives. On defense Horford is somewhat similar to Garnett in his ability to be in the right position at all times and improve the overall team defense. On offense Horford can score from anywhere on the floor, passes the ball very well, and is a big that can hit the 3-point shot consistently. Yes he got a huge contract but he really is a great fit. Fans get bogged down in how much money players make but could perhaps be more concerned with the team maintaining flexibility and cap space. The Cs still have financial flexibility.
Depth and Efficiency
Basketball-reference.com defines “Adjusted Net Rating” as the following: an estimate of point differential per 100 possessions adjusted for strength of opponent. Last season the Boston Celtics ranked #8 in the NBA in this metric. The team also made the top ten in various team offensive and defensive ratings. This is before the addition of Horford and either new players such as Jaylen Brown or the further growth of players such as Terry Rozier. This was already a pretty solid team that seems to be on an improving slope. It should be noted however that the Celts lost a very efficient player in Evan Turner.
This team has more than 15 NBA ready players trying to make the 15 roster spots. Their play on B2Bs since Stevens arrived and optimistic and upbeat attitude shows up very well in the regular season. This depth is a huge asset when dealing with the grind of an NBA season. So, we know the team works well together and as a unit put up some nice metrics last season that could improve. They need to prove that this formula will work in the postseason.

Jaylen Brown
Most fans annihilated Danny Ainge when he made this pick but the results so far may make many of those same fans reconsider. Granted we have only seen preseason and summer league action but in this environment rookie Jaylen Brown has looked very impressive. Even before losing Evan Turner the Cs were deplorable at getting to the FT line and creating their own shot. Isiah Thomas can create his own shot but may be better off the ball. Evan Turner was the Cs best option at creating his own shot and getting to the charity stripe. Yes, Brown is a rookie and is raw. However, he has shown that he has an explosive move to the basket and can score and draw a lot of fouls. He could be a very nice punch off the bench. He also could develop into an interesting low post offensive option.

So how will this season end? With so many things apparently moving in a positive direction it would be a disappointment if this team did not make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Anything can happen but look for the pressure on Ainge and Stevens to finally start ramping up as the explanations about “building” and “growing” and “accumulating assets” land on deaf ears.
