How To Feel at Home in a New City After Moving

Moving all of your stuff to a new city is enough of a hassle that many people forget about how they now live somewhere that might be totally alien to them. This alienation can start to set in once you get your new place set up, and it can feel very isolating and even painful. It’s important that we feel connected to our communities, no matter how new we might be to them. Here are a few tips on how to feel at home in a new city after moving so that you don’t have to feel like a stranger in your own neighborhood.

Explore Whenever You Can

It’s tempting to want to stay inside your new home. After all, it’s where all your stuff is, making it the closest thing to comfort you have. If you can, though, try to get out of the house whenever possible and explore the surrounding area. You’ll quickly get the hang of everything around you once you head out a few times. Try to go different distances each time. Walk around the immediate area, take a bike or converted e-bike a little bit further away, and drive to nearby points of interest whenever possible. The more familiar you are with your surroundings, the less intimidated you’ll feel by everything new.

Meet Your New Neighbors

Humans need social contact; it’s written into our DNA. If you’re more of an introvert, it can be very daunting to imagine speaking to your new neighbors or people around where you live. Stepping out of your comfort zone to find people with whom you can connect is one of the fastest ways to feel at home in a new city after moving there. It’s likely you’ll find someone who will at least be polite to you, so try not to worry too much.

Make Your Home a Safe Haven

Your new home shouldn’t feel like a hotel that you’re staying at for an extended period of time. Don’t wait to unpack or set up your personal items and decorations. When you start to make your new home feel more like you actually live there, you’ll feel much safer and like you have a base of operations to start expanding out from.

Volunteer in Your City

One great way you can meet like-minded people and get in touch with your new community is to volunteer somewhere nearby. Whether it’s a highway cleanup, a soup kitchen, or something else doesn’t matter so much, as long as it’s something you can enjoy. This is the perfect way to find new friends and feel like you’re a part of the community as a whole, rather than feeling like you’re intruding into a community you don’t belong to.
