Job Title: Baseball Projects Intern

Department: Baseball Projects
Reports To: Assistant Director, Baseball Projects
Status: Part-time, Nonexempt
Dates: Must be available to start by July 1, 2021. Internship will run ~9 months. Preference will be given to candidates who can start by February 1, 2021.

Primary Objective: The Baseball Projects team sits at the intersection of baseball analytics and broader baseball operations, organizing information and processes across player development, player acquisition, in-game strategy, and more.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide quantitative support to all aspects of player development, including next-morning analysis, player goal setting, and ad hoc studies.
  • Systemize advance scouting processes across major & minor league system.
  • Organize player pools & information to streamline player acquisition processes.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics or any other STEM field related to data science preferred. Equivalent, relevant work will be considered in lieu of formal education on a case by case basis.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):
Required:

  • Proficiency handling large datasets in R, SQL, Python, and/or comparable languages
  • Demonstrated initiative as a team-oriented leader

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of baseball analytics, strategy, and trends
  • Shiny application or other web development experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated, creative, and innovative with a high degree of integrity and attention to detail
  • Experience building predictive models
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish

Job Title: Baseball Operations Intern

Department: Baseball Operations
Reports To: Director, Baseball Operations
Status: Part-time, Nonexempt
Dates: Preference will be given to candidates who can start by March 1, 2021. End date is end of the 2021 season.

Primary Objective: Support the baseball operations department in research, administration, and day-to-day scouting operation tasks.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide support in all areas of advance scouting, including game day duties and preparation of the advance report and pre-series meetings.
  • Support all areas of the Scouting Department, including research, video clipping and player evaluation as well as preparation for the Amateur Draft Meetings.
  • Provide additional statistical analysis, economic and financial research as assigned or as time permits.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Equivalent, relevant work will be considered in lieu of formal education on a case by case basis.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):
Required:

  • Working knowledge of statistical baseball data and its application as it pertains to scouting information
  • Working knowledge of baseball strategy and current in-game management trends
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint

Preferred:

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish
  • Programming Skills (including SQL, R & Python, etc.)
  • Background in player evaluation
  • Background in video
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated with a high degree of integrity; takes personal responsibility for getting things done in a way that positively and professionally represents the organization
  • Demonstrated initiative; thinks creatively and takes actions that create a positive outcome for the team
