World Wide Technology Raceway, also known as WART, is an auto racing oval located in Madison, Illinois. It is adjacent to the historic Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis. Established in 1992, the now-defunct WART became the first midgettied oval track on the northern west side of the United States. The facility was designed by Bill France, who is now deceased. Bill French is responsible for the popular Mad Street circuit, which includes such notable names as Road America and the Grand Prix of Indiana.
During its history, WART has seen some of its most successful racing teams, including the Phoenix Racing Tigers, the Continental Tire Driving squad, and the Truck Stop America Racing Team. In recent years, however, the attendance levels have dwindled. Part of the problem may be the aging of the drivers who once thrilled the crowd with their skillful driving and out-of-this-world speed. According to Bill France, “The timing just wasn’t there lately”. He attributes this trend to the fact that the younger generation no longer idolized racing the way it was when they were children.
Another contributing factor is the popularity of Formula D Racing events, which have been held annually at the track. Drivers from all around the world participate in these events to represent their countries. Recently, however, the presence of Formula D Racing on the World Wide Technology racetrack in Indianapolis, Indiana led to a noticeable decrease in attendance for both the Truck Series and the Nationwide Series. With the recent addition of another racing category to the oval track, it is now slated to expand into two separate events next year. It is still early in the planning, but it looks as if the series may make a quick recovery.
What makes WART so unique is its location. Built on a synthetic-based track similar to those used in Formula D Racing, it allows racers to pit in the center of the race. This allows each driver a greater advantage, allowing them to slow down during the middle part of the race and make adjustments to their car. For instance, cars can switch fuel types mid-race, cutting down on extra wear and tear on tires.
There are three major classes in WART; class A, class B, and class C. Each consist of a different driver and different types of car. Drivers begin by being given a manual. This guide is broken up into basic procedures such as basic track layout, vehicle positions and defensive driving. Next, they are issued paddles, which allow them to choose which race track they will race on.
Once on the track, drivers can choose between multiple courses. They must first negotiate the course before the race starts. During this process, they can make adjustments to their cars. During the race, they must be careful to stay out of the other team’s track and stay out of certain creeks, water hazards, and on-path obstacles. These obstacles, called markers, are painted with different colors that show the direction to which the racers need to go.
After all the course has been negotiated, the race takes place. The race moves at a maximum speed of sixty miles an hour. At the end of the race, the winning team receives prize money, airtime, and pit crew support. Other events include:
The WART course is designed to simulate real-world races. It gives teams a chance to test their racing strategies and handling abilities on artificial turf. It also gives fans a chance to see some incredible speed and to see some of the new inventions being made in the worldwide technology arena. A great event for all ages, WART provides an opportunity for fans to immerse themselves in the world of wide technology.
