Tips for Hosting a Successful Virtual Game Night

If the pandemic has taught our society anything, it’s the importance of our connections with other people. During this difficult time, the pandemic has made most forms of in-person gatherings difficult, if not downright impossible. But thanks to the beauty of the internet, there are limitless ways to stay connected with friends and family. Here are some tips for hosting a successful virtual game night that’s sure to be a blast for your friends and family.

Setup

Preparing for a virtual game night is the same as hosting an in-person event. There are invitations to send, and the house needs cleaning along with many other tasks normally associated with hosting a party. Take the time before the event to make sure your technology is functioning and be sure to allow time for people to get their technical errors fixed. If video is involved, setting your camera up near a sofa large enough to seat everyone in your home in the same frame is very important.

Some hosts like to have planned events to go along with the games and often involve some form of craft or project. Mailing out packages before the event with all the necessary supplies is a fun way for young children to stay connected with family members who can’t be visited in person.

Themes and Events

Holidays are an obvious excuse to host a virtual hangout, but so is something as mundane as being a Friday night. If you do plan on hosting a themed event, including activities and games that incorporate the occasion is a great way to gather interest. Things like themed food and drink recipes are a good way to spice up the event. You can also incorporate crafts into your event in some way.

Online Party Games

Many of the most important tips for hosting a successful virtual game night involve picking the right games. This is where knowing your audience comes in. Video game fans have long been accustomed to playing online, so the transition will be minimal for most. For fans of classic tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons, you can continue your adventures over video chat.

But for those looking for a simpler experience, many classic board games feature a virtual option you can play with your friends. The same options exist for cards and many other family games. Jackbox games are also a very popular option, blending the interactivity of video games with the simplicity of your cell phone being the controller for the entire operation.
