Tips for a First-Time Charter Fishing Trip

Before you head out on the water, there are some things you should know to ensure the best outing possible. From communication to superstitions, don’t get on a boat without knowing these tips for a first-time charter fishing trip.

Talk to the Captain

As with many situations in life, communication is key. If you have a specific desire for the fishing trip, make that clear to the captain—they may tell you it’s impossible but will probably also tell you why that is. Keeping your hopes for the trip quiet just guarantees they won’t happen. If you can, make these desires known in advance so they can make any changes to their plans for the boat.

Prepare for Failure

It’s called fishing, not catching. Enjoy the experience of being out on the water with friends or family and enjoy the chase. If you do catch fish, all the better! But plenty of professional fishers have gone out before you and failed to bring anything back— a lack of bites doesn’t necessarily reflect poorly on you.

Plan For Seasickness

Offshore fishing may lead to an upset tummy or two. Seasickness and motion sickness are one and the same, and they affect people the most when they perform an activity that creates a conflict between different sensory receptors. Concentrating on a stationary object while feeling movement (reading a GPS on a boat) triggers this feeling.

When you feel motion sickness coming on, stop looking at things on the boat and focus on the horizon. You may also want to bring along some motion sickness medication, just in case.

Absolutely No Bananas

You may have heard of this superstition, but don’t think it’s a joke. Many people consider bananas a sign of bad luck for fishing captains.

Where did this superstition come from? Many believe that it originated in the 1700s at the height of trade with the Caribbean. Banana boats had to travel so quickly to prevent the fruit from spoiling that there was no time for fishing. Why has the superstition persisted? We won’t pretend to understand.

With these tips for a first-time charter fishing trip, you’re sure to have more fun and experience less disappointment when you get on the water.
