Stitching With the Stars: Celebrities Who Love To Sew

An essential part of cozy living is surrounding yourself with comforts and personal touches. And what’s more homey than homemade? Younger generations discovered old-fashioned hobbies during the pandemic, but lots of famous people were way ahead of them. Take up a new craft and stitch with the stars! These celebrities who love to sew just might inspire you.

Taylor Swift

When she’s not in the spotlight, Swift hunkers down with craft activities like making her own snow globes… and needlepointing. Fellow pop star Ed Sheeran was the recipient of one of her original canvases, which was inspired by the Drake lyric, “Started from the bottom/now we here.” Along with embroidered likenesses of the friends, she backstitched the words, “The struggle is real.”

George Clooney

During his decades as a bachelor, the suave actor learned how to sew on buttons and repair clothes. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he rekindled his passion for needlework. He told AARP magazine that he spent much of the time making clothes for his three-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella. He even repaired some of his wife Amal’s clothing.

Marie Osmond

The beloved country singer and TV star started a whole new career in the ’90s as a doll designer. But before any of that, she learned the art of quilting from her mother. In 2010, she published “Marie Osmond’s Heartfelt Giving: Sew and Quilt for Family and Friends.” It has step-by-step directions for her patterns. She calls it a love letter to future generations.

Chris Hemsworth

The cinematic Thor might not have much time for stitching these days, and enormous biceps probably aren’t helpful when it comes to precision work. But the Australian actor has told several publications that he loved cross-stitching as a kid. Because he was extraordinarily active, his parents encouraged him to sit down and focus once in a while with an embroidery hoop. He even tried his hands at patterns for trousers and considered going into fashion. Instead, he was tapped by Hollywood.

Vanna White

She may have the world’s most coveted job as the letter-turner on “Wheel of Fortune,” but the game show host has another skill, too: crocheting. She learned how to from her grandmother and has passed her expertise on to her own daughter. White has been a spokesperson for Lion Brand Yarn for almost 20 years. This celebrity loves to sew and fund-raise for charity as well. Her own line of yarn has raised $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
