NEW YORK — An MRI confirmed that Knicks rookie Obi Toppin has a right calf strain, the team announced on Saturday.
Toppin will be reevaluated in seven to 10 days. The Knicks are scheduled to play four games in the next week.
Toppin was injured in the Knicks’ season opener against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. He scored nine points and had three rebounds and two blocks in 24 minutes of playing time. The Knicks lost that game 121-107.
“It’s part of the game,” coach Tom Thibodeau said after Saturday’s 109-89 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. “You felt there would be some injuries due to the long layoff. It’s a strain, so what he has to do is get in, get treatment a couple times a day, study, put as much time into film work as possible.”
The Knicks selected Toppin with the eighth pick in the 2020 NBA draft. The 22-year-old Toppin, who was born in Brooklyn, played at Dayton for two years and declared for the draft after his redshirt sophomore season.
