Health and Safety Tips for Video Production

When you shoot your next video or feature film, make safety a priority on set. You, your crew, and your actors should be able to move about without wandering into hazards. Read on for a few health and safety tips for video production, and implement them on your set to ensure everyone stays safe.

Lift Safely

Camera equipment can get heavy. Take some stress off the backs of you and your crew by lifting from your legs. Bend your knees and keep your back as straight as possible. You may be tempted to show off how much equipment you can lift at one time, but ease up. Only carry what you can hold.

Secure Cables

As much as we may want all our tech to be wireless, we still need to plug in a great deal of camera equipment. Keep all cables taped to the floor with gaffer tape and try to keep them out of high-traffic areas. Point out all cables to everyone at the shoot and put up signage reminding everyone to watch their step.

Stabilize Yourself

Using a stabilizer vest is an easy way to take the strain off your back and arms while you shoot with a handheld camera. When you get the rest of your body involved in the shooting process, your arms won’t be as overworked and exhausted. In between shooting, stretch out and give your body a rest.

Watch the Weather

If you want to do an outdoor shoot, check the weather forecast regularly and keep your crew updated. Everybody involved in the shoot should have proper rain and snow gear when the occasion calls for it. And if it’s particularly hot out, bring water—and lots of it. Make sure everybody remains hydrated for the duration of the shoot. If a cast or crew member looks faint, get them indoors as soon as you can.

Assess Risks

When you plan and scout filming locations, conduct risk assessments for each location. Identify any potential hazards and precarious spots. Weigh the risks of using each location against the benefits—is capturing that bird’s-eye view worth the danger of shooting from that high? If you decide to go ahead with the location, determine and implement the specific safety measures you’ll need.

Make health and safety the central pillars of your production. No masterpiece is worth sustaining injuries or taking risks. Make sure your cast and crew are on the same page as you, and create a culture of safety and wellness on your set. With these health and safety tips for video production, your next shoot will be safe and productive!
