The lockdowns have been tough on everyone, but now there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Regardless, even as restrictions are lifted and more things open, some folks may be feeling skittish about getting out and hanging out. Fortunately, cars provide plenty of ways for you and your family to enjoy yourselves while slowly re-entering the world. Here’s a selection of family activities you can enjoy in the car where you can still have fun while playing safe.
Big-time sporting events may not be at maximum capacity yet, but there are still opportunities to celebrate our favorite teams while keeping our distance. Prep for the time when the stadiums and their parking lots are available again by encouraging those on your block to party in their driveways. You can borrow or rent out an area to plan a masked and socially-distant party of barbecue, snacks, and maybe the game projected on a big screen. Search around your area. Someone may have already had that very idea.
America used to be more of a car culture, and there were plenty of entertainment options that let you drive your car in and enjoy a great meal or a movie on the big screen. While drive-ins have become more uncommon, they’re still out there. If one of the old-time drive-in places aren’t within an hour’s drive for you, plenty of local park districts, schools, and city governments have established summertime drive-in movies in parking lots and other areas. Social media sites for your town and surrounding cities are the best place to search for these types of events.
The open road is always calling; especially now as vaccinations continue, and federal and state governments go easier on mask mandates. But it’s still possible to see a lot of the country while staying in your car. Bring your car in for a checkup to ensure the tires are in good shape, the oil is clean and clear, and the brakes are in perfect working order. Plenty of wide-open natural areas (think state parks and nature centers) are available to drive to and visit while staying more than six feet from others, and a remote camping trip is always a healthy choice.
These may or may not be available near you, but some places like state fairgrounds have begun offering drive-in concerts. Many bands and performers have broken away from the online meeting and now perform on-stage to an audience of automobiles and their passengers. For family activities you can enjoy in the car, you can’t beat a non-virtual concert.
