Essential Safety Tips for Summer Events

As the country slowly begins to reopen this summer, outdoor events are back on our schedules. For many of us, it’s been a while since we’ve attended a large-scale event of any kind in person. If you’re attending an event this summer, you may need a refresher on how to stay safe. These essential safety tips for summer events will prevent you from endangering yourself and others, whether you’re attending a local fireworks show or a live concert.

Keep Yourself Clean

Even if you’re vaccinated, it’s still important to keep yourself sanitized against other forms of illness—such as bacterial infections and viruses unrelated to COVID-19. Large events can become breeding grounds for illnesses. Disinfect your hands after touching anything dirty, such as portable bathrooms or even guardrails. Avoid unnecessary contact with strangers whenever possible.

Stay Hydrated

Heat and dehydration form a deadly combo during the summer months, especially during events. Always keep a water bottle with you, even if you’re not thirsty. Don’t underestimate the heat—large crowds intensify hot temperatures due to natural body heat. If you don’t drink enough water, you could suffer from heatstroke; at a big event, heatstroke could prove fatal.

If you’re drinking alcoholic beverages at the event and it’s hot out, stagger drinks with water and avoid getting drunk. Alcohol dehydrates you and drunkenness negatively impacts your ability to regulate body temperature.

Safety Begins in the Parking Lot

Parking lots are chaotic, bustling places anywhere you go—but they’re even worse at event venues. Rushing attendees and panicked drivers can make dangerous decisions in the parking lot. Be prepared for drivers to cut you off, back out of their spots without looking, or speed. Keeping yourself safe in a parking lot will help keep others safe as well.

Once you’re parked, remember where your car is. If you know you struggle with memorizing parking spaces, keep a pad of paper and a pen nearby to write down the space’s location.

Apply and Reapply Your Sunscreen

Sunburn is painful and puts you at a higher risk for skin cancers such as melanoma. You may hate the texture of sunscreen or dislike the effort required to apply it, but it can save you from burning to a crisp outside.

Remember, applying sunscreen is an essential safety tip for summer events, even if it’s cloudy outside or you’re going swimming—clouds and water don’t prevent sunburn. Some clouds even intensify UV rays, making you even more likely to get a sunburn!
