If you’re familiar with Disney princesses, then you’ll know that there is no such thing as too much female lead in Disney movies. This is especially true in the case of the classic tale of Princess Diana, who for many people is the idealistic but flawed heroine of all time. Although Princess Diana was born a prince, she was fiercely loyal to her family and refused to marry a man (in order to stay a princess), which for many men in her time was tantamount to desertion. But Princess Diana did live out her life to the full and was eventually successful in her quest to win the crown of her beloved king. This fascinating tale has been told countless times and is one of the biggest hits in the history of Disney movies.
Diana, Princess of Wales, also was part of the royal family. She was the maiden daughter of King Edward and Queen Elizabeth, and was known affectionately as the Queen of Hearts due to her love of knitting and her talent as a teacher. She also had a crush on Taffy, the common sheep dog, which explains her lifelong friendship with the boy. Princess Diana’s life was always full of mystery and unanswered questions, and the character was definitely a protagonist in a classic fairy tale. As an important and pivotal member of the royal family, Princess Diana had an important part to play in England’s history.
In Disney’s version of the life story line, Princess Diana is born in Epcot Center in Paris. There, she lives with her mother and younger sister Pontus, while her father, King Henry II lives in exile. When her father is unable to continue ruling over Britain, Princess Diana is forced to take care of her sisters and live in a small country house by her grandmother, iolet, where she meets the orphan, Tiana. The three soon become friends.
Moving on to modern-day England, Princess Diana continues to live with her grandmother and younger sister, Tiana, where they attend the local school and discover other life lessons that help them deal with life’s many challenges. When the Royal family comes to visit, the three are welcomed to the palace by their father, King Henry. While on this trip, however, the three are captured aboard a carriage crash, which leads them to learn more about their familial relationship and the responsibilities that they each have to assist their country. As the film progresses, it gradually becomes clearer who the main characters are, who they’re dealing with, and why. In the end, it becomes clear why this novel series has been so successful.
It is easy to follow the plot of the story – three very young princesses who become stranded on an island after their boat crashes. The problem is that it doesn’t take long for the audience to get bored with the characters, and the writers lose a lot of potential success by not developing any real, flesh-and-blood characters beyond the princess characters. Luckily, Jane Eyre and Nunnally Frost come into their own as the narrative develops. However, it is often these very minor characters who provide the most interesting development. They add a touch of realism to an otherwise fantastical story and allow the audience to understand what causes Princess Diana and her friends to act and react in the ways that they do.
A book with four princesses is going to be lighthearted and whimsical in nature, and there is little doubt that many children would enjoy this. However, it is the fairy tales that follow the life of these princesses that really keep children interested in reading. The book begins by introducing us to Charmaine, the beautiful, but slightly odd princess, and she proves to be a great friend to young Henry. It then jumps forward in time to show Prince Philip, who is naturally intrigued by the way that Princess Diana acts, learns more about her, and ultimately falls head over heels in love with her.
As you might expect, the relationship between the prince and the princess from fairy tale land is slightly different than the one that develops between Princess Diana and the man who was actually her Prince Charming. However, the book does not focus as much on those relationships, instead opting to focus more on the friendship that develops between the various princesses. This is perhaps part of the book’s charm, as it does not try to draw the reader too heavily to one or two specific princesses, allowing the story to develop freely without being too dependent on the presence or absence of other characters.
Princess Daisy, also known as Daffodil, is definitely one of my favourite fairy tale princesses. I read the book when my son was five, and she has always managed to bring a smile to my face whenever I see her. Unlike some of the other Disney princesses, I think that this book actually captures the spirit of what any princess should really be like – kind, gentle, and full of fun. If your child is looking for a book that will make them feel extra special and give them the feeling that their princesses are living out a life that they would enjoy living, then Princess Daisy might be just what you’re looking for.
