5 Important Things To Look for in Running Shorts

Whether you’re training for a marathon or going for a casual jog, the right pair of running shorts is important to have. Comfort, performance, and practicality all play a part in choosing the perfect pair. Not sure what to look for? Don’t sweat it. Here are five important things everyone should look for in running shorts.

1. Breathability

Running makes your body generate a lot of heat, and the last thing you want is fabric that traps it. Look for lightweight, breathable materials like polyester or nylon blends. These fabrics wick away sweat and keep you comfortable on those long, sweaty runs. Lots of runners also appreciate mesh panels for added airflow.

2. Secure Fit

Your shorts shouldn’t feel too tight or too loose. Too tight, and you’ll be dealing with chafing and discomfort. Too loose, and you’ll find yourself constantly adjusting them. You should try to find a snug yet comfortable fit. Most runners prefer shorts with built-in liners for extra support. If you’re unsure, try both 2-in-1 shorts (liners built in) and traditional cuts to find what suits you best.

3. Length for Freedom of Movement

One of the key differences between training and running shorts is that running pairs aren’t as long. You probably won’t find running shorts that go past 7 inches. That said, there is still some variation to choose from, and the length can affect your performance. For faster workouts or races, shorter lengths (3–5 inches) allow for optimal range of motion. Longer shorts (5–7 inches) offer more coverage and may feel more comfortable for casual runs. It all boils down to personal preference, but make sure the shorts don’t restrict your stride.

4. Pockets

If you’re going on a short run, you don’t want to gear up with a hydration pack, but you still need storage for your phone, keys, cards, and maybe a gel or two. Look for shorts with secure pockets. Zippered or elastic-lined pockets are both great options.

5. Chafe-Free Design

If you’ve been running for a while, you’re probably no stranger to the dreaded chafing. Picking shorts with flatlock seams or no seams will help by reducing friction. Additionally, moisture-wicking liners or anti-chafe cream can help you stay comfortable when the miles start to add up.

Run Smarter With the Right Shorts

Investing in the right pair of running shorts can transform your training experience. Breathability, fit, length, storage, and anti-chafing features are all important things to look for to keep your runs comfortable and distraction-free. Your gear should work with you, not against you.
