4 Athletes Who Received Contracts Using Bitcoin

Sports and cryptocurrency have been growing more closely intertwined in recent years. While some athletes have invested in Bitcoin and other digital assets, others have gone further and signed contracts that pay them in cryptocurrency.

These are some of the most notable athletes who received contracts using Bitcoin.

Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence, the former quarterback for Clemson University and the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, signed a record-breaking NFL contract that will pay him in Bitcoin. The value of his contract was worth over $36 million, but he didn’t disclose how much of it he converted to Bitcoin.

Lawrence is also an investor in several blockchain companies and has been outspoken about his support for Bitcoin.

Russell Okung

Russell Okung, an offensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers, is another NFL player who has taken a contract using Bitcoin. Okung signed a two-year deal with the team, allowing him to receive Bitcoin payments.

He has been a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency and even helped launch a company that allows people to receive payment in Bitcoin. Okung has also spoken about how he believes Bitcoin will one day replace the US dollar.

Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr., a wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, signed a deal worth $750,000 and converted it to Bitcoin on November 12, 2021. Beckham faced some criticism for signing the deal, as it came at a time when the value of Bitcoin was plummeting.

However, Beckham has been a longtime supporter of cryptocurrency and believes there are many reasons why Bitcoin mining won’t disappear.

Saquon Barkley

Saquon Barkley, a running back for the New York Giants, announced all his endorsement money from 2021 will be in cryptocurrency. Barkley has signed deals with Nike, Pepsi, and Hulu.

While the exact value of his endorsement deals is unknown, many estimate that Barkley made over $10 million in 2021. Barkley is also due for a new contract and might be looking to get paid in cryptocurrency as well.

These four athletes are just some of the many that have taken contracts using Bitcoin. With more and more athletes investing in cryptocurrency, we’ll likely see more signing deals that pay them in Bitcoin.

Contracts, endorsement deals, and other agreements where an athlete receives cryptocurrency payments are becoming increasingly common. It will be interesting to see how this trend continues to evolve in the years to come.
